Information Nerd
Posted by lilykarin on april 13th, 2010 . Filed under: Reading & Books .I’ve had three eras of reading like crazy in my life, so far (Not so sure someone who’s 23 can have eras just yet.. haha!) The first was when I was in 4th to 6th grade, I read so much I got to read from the teacher’s library instead of the kids’ one since I had already gone through everything I wanted to read there. And I kept a database in an excel file where I kept track of title, writer, ISBN-number, publishing date and edition, my rating and a text about each book. One of those years I had read like 900 books.. children’s & youth books but still… (and everything Margit Sandemo ever wrote, Grottbjörnens folk, the books about Gunborg by Tora Dahl and such) then I started 7th grade and I think I tried to socialize myself into school too much to have time to read like that.
Then I had another period a bit like that from when I was ca 15 to 17 when I read a lot of classics, a lot of fact books about random trivia like piracy, folklore and fairytales, history and linguistics (I studied latin and greek both at home and took a small extra class in school, tried to learn icelandic and esperanto on my own which failed totally) and so on… I used to go to an old book shop called Lectura which is located in Torpa in Jönköping, was there almost every saturday. I also worked there for a little while. And then I think I stopped because I got a bit too stressed out in school and slightly depressed aswell, and I was tired of reading at all for quite a while.
And now it’s begun for real again I guess because now I’ve been reading about four or five books/week…. I won’t write about them all this time because I don’t feel like it at all today! I’ve graded them at Boktipset if you’re super curious.
18. När man skjuter arbetare… - Kerstin Thorwall
19. Huset med den blinda glasverandan – Herbjørg Wassmo
20. Det stumma rummet – Herbjørg Wassmo
21. Hudlös himmel – Herbjørg Wassmo
22. Nästa som rör mig – Bodil Malmsten
23. The Old Man and the Sea – Ernest Hemingway
24. Solange – Willy Kyrklund
25. Vad Jag Älskade Dig – Zaharia Stancu
26. Dear Friends - David Deitcher
27. Dinas Bok – Herbjørg Wassmo
28. När Jag Var Sjuk – Tora Dahl
29. Drömfakulteten – Sara Stridsberg
30. Ivan Aguéli – Torbjörn Säfve
31. Henrietta ska du också glömma - Stig Claesson
Books I thrifted in Jönköping (except the Robert A. Dahl one which I am reading for my course in democracy & culture) and some soy milk and some rum… I took this picture at Carin’s place and then I read Drömfakulteten and Ivan Aguéli (both of which were really really good books! Then my dad gave me five more books when I got to my parents’ place… (more Zaharia Stancu, the Stig Claesson book that I read on the train back to Göteborg, a norweigan poet and Gunnar Ekelöf) a bit stressful to see all the unread ones pile up!
I think my goal this time around is to stay in the reading era for longer or get back on track more soon once the enthusiasm for learning isn’t as strong anymore. I know I love knowledge more than pretty much anything else so I don’t know why I stop taking in information at times.

I do the same with books. Read a lot and then not at all that is. I tend to do the same with music. My theory is that my mind can only take so much in before it needs a break to absorb things. I used to feel really badly about it but try to accept it and remind myself that it’s just a phase that’ll pass.
In my case I also think my brain is trying to slow me down before I get too compulsive about it.
Happy reading!
